Our staff

Sailor, ship's engineer and steamship captain...
The ZSG employs approx. 80 permanent members of staff. In summer, the team is joined by several nautical seasonal workers who are employed above all as sailors, as well as staff who are based in the ticket office at Bürkliplatz.

In order to keep the fleet in top working order, the ZSG requires qualified manual workers, such as carpenters, painters, mechanics, electricians, plumbers and locksmiths. They are recruited on the labour market and subsequently trained for nautical work in the course of internal training courses. This offers employees the opportunity to enjoy greater variation and satisfaction in their professional life. In the summer, they work on the boats as sailors, cash desk employees, engineers or captains; in the winter, they are based at the wharf. There are no “career changers” in this profession. Everyone starts off as a sailor and climbs the career ladder until they reach the position of engineer or captain. This training from sailor to steamship captain can take up to 20 years.
